Introduction
Montreal has launched a call for tenders for the acquisition, installation, configuration, implementation and deployment of software and hardware solutions for alerting in complete fire stations as well as the dismantling of the existing system, on all fire stations.
The 911 Emergency Center of Montreal serves as the gateway for all emergency calls serving a population of 1.8 million citizens. Firefighters are always the first responders to an emergency.
The Montreal Fire Department has 67 fire stations (making it the 2nd largest fire department in Canada and the 7th largest in North America).
Challenges
Currently the system in place is rather obsolete, and part of the difficulty consists in making the 2 systems coexist together during a waiting period of 30 days without any impact on rescue operations. Service cuts are not an option at this level of responsibility.
Solution
The installed device is a low-voltage system, structured cabling, connecting, audio, video equipment, servers; processing all the necessary data (internet links, speakers, screens, televisions) to transcribe 911 messages as quickly as possible.
This software makes it possible to manage incoming calls to transcribe them vocally and textually, to the fire station able to respond as adequately as possible. A text recognition system is used, but the difficulty lies in the local French-speaking Quebec contextualization so that the instructions transmitted are flawless.
The interventions will take place in the control center and in the 67 fire stations over a total period of 3 years. Installation and configuration operations will take place simultaneously, in 4 fire stations per month. For each fire station, it takes 2 months of intervention and 8 dedicated workers, i.e., 32 people mobilized per month, not counting the supervision and site monitoring staff.
Results
The contract provides for installation from 2022 to 2025, in addition to maintenance over 5 years.
This project is a great pride for the GASTIER teams, particularly mobilized especially on all the logistics part rather substantial in terms of staff.
- Electrical and instrumentation work
- Work to integrate a technological platform* (in collaboration with PURVIS SYSTEM)
- Support and maintenance work (5-year contract).
